Delphi: The Navel of the Earth

Delphi, nestling in the feet of Mount Parnassos, became renowned in antiquity and in modern world for its famous sanctuary of Apollo, god of light and music as well as for the cult of the god Dionysus, patron and theatre. In ancient times, people flocked to Delphi from all over the world at the time, to receive the oracles of Pythia and to participate in the Pythian Games. These were second in importance as an athletic event only to the great Olympic Games, yet first in the Pan-Hellenic Contents for music and poetry. During the Pythian Games a truce was declared to facilitate the participation of athletes, artists, spectators and pilgrims. This truce offered to rival city-states an opportunity foe peaceful coexistence while competing in the athletic track and in the field of Arts.
